How to Transfer LiveUpdate Definitions to Another Computer

Norton and Symantec products use LiveUpdate to get the latest virus definitions from the vendor's database. These definitions enable the software to detect and remove new threats, and they increase the computer's defense against malware. LiveUpdate, however, requires an Internet connection to download the definitions from the server. If your PC is unable to connect to a network, sign onto another computer and download the most recent definitions from the Symantec or Norton website. You can save the updates to a removable drive and transfer the files to your primary PC.

Instructions
1. Sign on to another computer, browse to the Symantec or Norton website (see the links in the Resources) and select your product from the drop-down menu.

2. Click the "Definitions" link under the "File-Based Protection (Traditional Antivirus)" heading. Scroll to the appropriate platform, and then click the download link to save the file to disk.

3. Insert a flash drive into an available USB slot on the computer, and then select "Open Device to View Files" from the pop-up window that appears.

4. Select the "Downloads" folder under Libraries, and then drag-and-drop the downloaded file onto the flash drive.

5. Remove the drive from the PC when the transfer completes. Insert the drive into the other computer.

6. Click "Open Device to View Files" from the pop-up menu, and then double-click the file you downloaded from the Symantec or Norton website (see Resources.)

7. Follow the on-screen prompts to install the updates to your product.

Tips & Warnings
To find out whether your computer operates on a 32-bit or 64-bit platform, press "Windows-I," click "PC Info" and then review the information in the System Type field.

The filename for the LiveUpdate download varies depending on the product, the system platform and the date of the release.

Information in this article applies to Windows 8. It may vary slightly or significantly with other versions or products.
